Most of us notice that coming out of Winter, our skin can tend to look lacklustre, our hair dry and nails brittle and we are baffled as to why. It could be that the foods that attune us to the dry, cold weather – hearty soups and stews; sweet, root vegetables; warming/moistening grains; red meats – are all warming and sustaining and perfect for winter. But they are also acid and mucus-forming foods that require a little spring cleaning once winter bids farewell.

The lovely thing about Spring is that it invites us to lighten up and allow our body to do a thorough seasonal cleaning job by looking at the foods that we now need to add into our diet.

Spring greens and sprouts are alkalising and detoxifying. They are low in fat and full of revitalising, rejuvenating life force energy. They are also packed with vitamins, minerals, fibre, antioxidants and other phyto-nutrients. They break up excesses accumulated over the long winter season by reducing mucus and expelling toxins as the body seeks to do its natural spring cleaning chores.

Spring greens also help detoxify the liver, the major organ associated with Spring. The liver serves many functions in the body; one of its most important is to filter and breakdown toxins that can result from general overeating, as well as from alcohol, drugs, oily and fried foods, heavy meats, pesticides, and chemicals. A liver overwhelmed by winter eating and drinking habits can be revitalised by the alive, chlorophyll-rich foods offered by Spring. If it’s green, it’s good!

To assist the liver and the body as a whole in Spring, we need lighter, cooling foods that are generally bitter and pungent (to dispel mucus); pungent (to move energy); and sour (to assist the liver, break up heavy fats, and relieve indigestion and stagnation).

Sour - the colour green, the liver/gall bladder, and the emotion anger are all associated with Spring according to Chinese Five Phase Theory. A liver overwhelmed by heavy foods and toxins can stagnate energy (“Qi”), leading to anger, depression and mood swings, and the inability to plan and make decisions. The sour flavour is cooling; has a drying, astringent effect; and acts on the liver to relieve congestion. Lemon tea, simply lemon and hot water, is a good example of a fitting antidote to a heavy meal. Fruits and berries that are sour and cooling —grapefruit, lemons, apples, mango, pears, and strawberries — also assist the liver and fit a Spring diet.

Bitter – bitter foods are cooling and draining. They help rid the body of excess fluid and damp conditions that can lead to Spring colds, asthma, allergies and congestion. Spring gives us plenty of these light, bitter foods through the plethora of leafy Spring greens and vegetables like asparagus. Also good are vegetables in the cabbage family such as bitter brussels sprouts, kale, and broccoli rabe (rapini).

Pungent – pungent foods, such as onions, garlic, ginger, watercress, radishes, and turnips are also fitting for Spring. Pungent foods help clear the lungs and large intestine, stimulate digestion, and move Qi to relieve stagnation. Pungent foods also move energy upward and outward and help the body break up and dispel mucus, particularly from mucus-forming foods like dairy.

Spring foods to focus on.
In Spring, people who are generally balanced will want to eat foods from all five flavours — sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, and salty — but with less emphasis on the sweet, salty sustaining foods of Winter and more upon the bitter, pungent, and sour detoxifying foods of Spring. At this time of year, it is best to try to limit red meat and dairy, which are mucus-forming. Also try to rotate from wheat and oats to the more drying bitter/sour grains such as rye and amaranth, as well as buckwheat, corn, millet, and quinoa, all of which are drying and cleansing compared to oats and wheat. Because wheat allergies can result from heavy reliance on wheat throughout the year and from poor food combining when proteins are eaten with wheat (e.g., sandwiches, pizza), consider rotating in Spring to more seasonally-appropriate, non-gluten grains such as quinoa, millet, and buckwheat.

Note: A devoted rotation to Spring bitter and raw foods will not generally work well for people who suffer a deficient immune system, have cold conditions, and/or weak digestion. Cooked foods and foods that are sweet in flavour are more strengthening and tonifying and may be appropriate throughout the year for some individuals with cold and/or deficient conditions. In the same spirit, it may make sense for someone with heavy congestion and excess heat conditions to eat cooling, cleansing raw foods and bitter greens throughout the year. A person’s physical profile should always take precedence over seasonal food considerations.

Well all is not lost! You can help reduce the puffiness with a few quick actions by following my morning tips:

Drink Nettle Tea - it really does help drain excess fluid

Get your circulation moving as soon as you wake up by taking ten good slow and deep breaths and then jumping around the room for several minutes

Stimulate the lymphatic system with a massage using acupressure, or if time is really short, at least two minutes 'tapping massage' around the eye socket area. With one hand over each eye, use the middle or third finger to tap firmly and rapidly around the whole of the eye socket. Press your thumbs under the brow arch in the inner corner of the eye to drain the lymph system and hold for a minute.

Emergency tips!

Lie on the bed and apply a cool compress for at least ten minutes with your eyes closed.

Two ways to make a cool compress:

Make up some green tea as normal. Allow it to cool slightly. Pour it into an ice cube tray and freeze. When you need it, wrap a cube in muslin or cotton wool and use as a compress alternating between each eye.

Use two cold wet tea bags (put them in the fridge) of chamomile or green tea, or cotton pads soaked in rosewater and use as compresses.

As a first step, humidify your bedroom. A humidifier in the bedroom is the ultimate answer to replenish some of the lost humidity while you sleep. If you don’t want to splash out on an electric appliance, place pretty saucers filled with pebbles near your radiators, and keep topped up with water and these will have a similar effect.

Step two, boost your oxygen intake and sleep with the window slightly open.

Step three, start each morning with a glass of warm water and squeeze of lemon. Drinking plays havoc with our skin and liver and this is a great way to begin getting that sluggish liver into action.

And finally, increase your antioxidant intake. You can do this in many different ways, but some of the easiest ways are by including blueberries in your diet, or drinking green or rooibos tea!

It's time to let go of relationships or things that are no longer serving you. Releasing them creates space where new invigorating things can come into your life.

Introduce pungent flavours into your diet such as ginger or horseradish, because they stimulate the lungs and large intestine.

Activities for Autumn require control and proper use of the breath, so cardiovascular exercise is fabulous but not in excess.

Keep hydrated – the moisture of the humid summer gives way to autumn dryness. So drink tea or room temperature water to help your body remain hydrated as well as eating soup – a nourishing, wholesome, all-encompassing meal-in-one which is warming and helps with hydration.

Decrease stress. Stress depletes our immune system, so find something that works for you. I do some meditation and yoga, but something as simple as laughing works! No matter how careful we tend to be, though, sometimes we just miss spots or don’t apply enough and it all goes wrong and its never nice if you have ended up with a painful sunburn. Prevention is always best

Here’s a few things that help soothe your skin, prevent peeling and heal sun damage.

Aloe. It’s the age-old remedy for treating sunburns – and for good reason – so keep a bottle on hand or better still keep fresh aloe in your kitchen. Put some in the fridge and apply when needed to the skin to soothe sunburn and prevent peeling.

Vinegar. Not my favourite summer smell, but if you put white or apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle and mist onto a sunburn, it can help to prevent unsightly blisters and peeling. If the smell is just too much mix a solution of 1 part water and 1 part vinegar and spray on sunburned skin before bed.

Tea. The tannic acids that occur naturally in tea are a great remedy for sun-damaged skin. Steep a pot of black tea and cool it in the refrigerator before applying it to the burn using a compress or just press the tea bag directly onto the skin. It will help reduce inflammation, decrease redness and promote healing.

Cucumbers. Fresh cut cucumber cools, hydrates and soothes the skin making this an ideal remedy for sensitive skin or sunburned lips. Just cut refrigerated cucumber slices and apply directly to the skin!

Potatoes. The starch from a grated potato can help soothe a burn when applied directly to skin so either grate a raw, cold potato and place in a cheese cloth to apply or just apply fresh cut slices directly to your skin.

Unravelling suncream

Choosing a sunscreen isn't as simple as it used to be. A whole new generation of sunscreens is just hitting the market, designed to offer fuller protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Given all the new options, how do you know which is the best sunscreen for you?

Sunscreens help shield you from the sun's dangerous ultraviolet (UV) rays in two ways. Some work by scattering the light, reflecting it away from your body. Others absorb the UV rays before they reach your skin.

There are two types of rays that we need to protect against -

UVB rays affect the epidermis, or the top layer of the skin, which results in nasty sunburns. UVB rays are the strongest during sunny, summer days between the hours of 11:00am and 3:00pm, so it’s important to apply and reapply your sunscreen continuously.

UVA rays affect the dermis or the deeper layer of skin, which contributes to long-term sun damage and skin cancer. While UVB rays are highest in the summer, UVA rays don’t seasonally discriminate and are present at all times during the year so it’s also important to wear your sunscreen during those cloudy winter days too – these are the ageing rays that also increase skin cancer risk. While UVA rays don't cause sunburn, they penetrate deeply into skin and cause wrinkles. It is estimated that up to 90% of skin changes associated with ageing are really caused by a lifetime's exposure to UVA rays.

In the summertime, don’t just rely on your foundation or tinted moisturiser for SPF coverage, as we tend to just use these on our face with our neck and decolletage missing out, but by having SPF coverage in your moisturiser you are more likely to ensure nowhere is missed.

What to look for when buying sunscreen

The first thing to look for is that the sunscreen has broad-spectrum or multi-spectrum protection for both UVB and UVA.

UVB protection. The SPF factor rates how effective the sunscreen is in preventing sunburn caused by UVB rays. If you'd normally burn in 10 minutes, SPF 15 multiplies that by a factor of 15, meaning you could go 150 minutes before burning.

An SPF15 filters out 93% of UVB rays, I like to recommend and wear at least an SPF of 30 which filters out 97%. People who have very fair skin, a family history of skin cancer, or conditions like lupus that increase sensitivity to sunlight should use SPF 30 or higher.

UVA protection. There is no rating to tell you how good a sunscreen is at blocking UVA rays, so when it comes to UVA protection, you need to pay attention to the ingredients. The most effective and least controversial ingredient for UVA protection seems to be zinc oxide as it is (at the moment) the most stable, although it still degrades, causing free radicals which is why it is necessary to reapply. The other ingredient which is widely accepted at Cancer centres is Titanium dioxide. they are less likely to irritate the skin, and with new manufacturing techniques they no longer leave you looking pale and ghostly.

Water and sweat resistance. If you're going to be exercising or in the water, it's worth getting a sunscreen resistant to water and sweat. This boils down to:

Water resistant sunscreen - SPF level stays effective after 40 minutes in the water.

Very water resistant means it holds after 80 minutes of swimming. These sunscreens are in no way waterproof, so you'll need to reapply them regularly.

Kid-friendly sunscreen. The sensitive skin of babies and children is easily irritated by chemicals in adult sunscreens, so avoid sunscreens with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and benzephenones like dioxybenzone, oxybenzone, or sulisobenzone. Children's sunscreens use ingredients less likely to irritate the skin, like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Unlike chemical ingredients, these protect babies' skin without being absorbed.

Sunscreen for skin problems or allergies People who have sensitive skin or skin conditions like roseacea may also benefit from using sunscreens designed for children. Go for titanium dioxide or zinc oxide and avoid chemicals like para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), dioxybenzone, oxybenzone, or sulisobenzone. Also look for ingredients with alcohol or fragrances, and avoid these. It's also been found that chemical sunscreens can bring on prickly heat.

A brand you like. Even if a brand is recommended by all the experts, if you don't like it, you're not going to use it, so personal preference is really important. Here are some sunscreens that I use and can personally recommend – Invisible Zinc, Hamiltons, Green People Organic Range.

How to Wear Sunscreen

While choosing the right sunscreen is important, it won't help much if you don't use it daily and correctly. Use these tips from the experts.

Apply the sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before you go out in the sun.

Use enough to cover your whole body. Don't skimp. A number of studies show that people simply don't use enough - and only get 10% to 25% of the benefit.

Don't forget the easy-to-miss spots, like the tips of your ears, your feet, the back of your legs, and, if you have one, your bald spot. Since your lips can also get sunburned, use a UV-protective lip balm and reapply it regularly.

No matter how long-lasting it's supposed to be, reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours, and more often if you're sweating or getting wet.

Pay attention to the expiration date on the bottle. Sunscreen loses its effectiveness over time.

Wear sunscreen whenever you're out during the day - and not only when it's hot and sunny. On a grey, overcast day, up to 80% of the dangerous UV rays still make it through the clouds. And during the winter, exposure to the sun's rays can still have damaging effects on your skin.

Sunscreen Isn't Enough

Some people have the impression that wearing sunscreen makes them fully protected against the sun's rays, this isn’t the case. No sunscreen can do that.

No matter how high the SPF, no matter how thickly you slather it on, experts say sunscreen will never fully protect you. This misunderstanding can be dangerous: people who think they're safe wind up spending too much time in the sun and raise their risk of skin cancer and other problems.

So in addition to wearing good sunscreen, here’s some other things you can do:

Stay in the shade when possible when UV radiation levels are highest, usually from 11am to 3pm

Wear sunglasses

Growth. Flexibility. Vision.

According to classical Chinese medicine, these are qualities associated with the energy of Springtime. Living in an agrarian society, the ancient Chinese had ample opportunity to observe the natural world in great detail. They came to understand that each season carries a distinct energy which also manifests in the functioning of our bodies, minds, and spirits, since we too belong to the natural world. Within this system of medicine, each season is associated with a particular element, a colour, a climatic force, an emotion, and a set of energy pathways, organs, and physiological functions in the body. Connecting with the energy of the seasons both outdoors and within ourselves can help us stay healthy, cultivate the strengths associated with each season, and recognize when we are getting out of balance.

Springtime is associated with the Wood element, its colour is blue-green, its climatic force is wind, and it is all about creativity, growth, and change. The emotion of Spring is anger, which is not necessarily a negative thing. If we understand anger as the impulse to create change, then we see that it can be a very positive and dynamic force when it is channelled in a healthy way.

Looking inwardly at our bodies, the Liver and the Gallbladder are the internal organs associated with the Spring energy. In the context of Chinese medicine, these organs are in charge of smooth flow throughout the body and they have particular influence over the eyes, the joints, tendons and ligaments, the reproductive system, the blood, and some aspects of digestion.

Mother nature at this time of year is showing us little green shoots of plants that are bursting up through the soil, animals are becoming more active (in some cases giving birth), and the wind has been blowing like nobody's business. All of these signs tell us something about the energy of the season.

It is time for things that have been resting and replenishing, germinating and gestating, hidden and gathering power through the cold and quiet winter, to emerge and burst forth, take form and assert themselves. So it goes with our plans and aspirations - this is the time when the unformed idea begins to take on shape and detail. A time to do, we hone our vision, focus our energy, make decisions and take action. When the inevitable obstacles arise, we stay rooted in our mission while remaining flexible and seeking a new path, just as shoots of grass seek out the cracks in the sidewalk in order to keep reaching for the sun. When the winds of change blow through our lives, we stay rooted in who we are and bend gracefully to accommodate their force. Once the gale has died down, we spring back upright and resume growing in our chosen direction, just like those same blades of grass adapting to the winds.

If our own, internal Springtime energy is strong, then creative flow and adapting to change will come easily to us. However, if our Springtime energy is out of balance, we may lack vision and focus or we may lack the decisiveness and firmness of purpose to achieve our vision. We may be thrown off by changes and obstacles, either becoming rigid, and angry when things do not go according to plan, or feeling so hopeless and frustrated that we give up on our goals.

Get outside. Outdoor air helps the qi flow, as does exercise. If you find yourself feeling irritable, lethargic, or stuck, find some time for an outdoor activity. Hiking, gardening, golf, bicycling – whatever suits you!

Eat Green. Not surprisingly, green is the colour that goes with Spring, wood, and the liver. Green, leafy foods are especially helpful to the liver qi. If you can find in-season baby greens, they're the best (spinach, fiddle ferns, wild leeks, watercress, sprouts) - all can improve the liver's overall functions and aid in the movement of qi.

Express yourself and Envision Possibility! Dancing, cooking, writing, making art or music… See your life growing beyond present obstacles. Write your goals and dreams, take one step at a time. Take this season as an opportunity to examine what you would like to change in your life. Make a plan and start putting the steps in action and walk steadily towards your north star. Any form of creative expression helps nourish and channel Wood energy in a healthy way.

Taste Sour. Sour foods also help soothe and smooth the liver qi, and can ease the transition into Spring. Add lemon to your water, pickles to your sandwich, vinegar and olive oil dressings to your salad.

If you have allergies, take care of them. Allergy symptoms can make an otherwise lovely time of year quite unpleasant. Acupuncture is great for helping with this.

Stretch. According to Chinese medicine, the liver stores blood during rest and releases it to the tendons and muscles in times of activity. Taking a few minutes to stretch or do yoga in the morning can help you move more fluidly through the day.

Be Gentle. The Wood element in Chinese Medicine has a tendency towards frustration and impatience, so acknowledge yourself for your efforts, and kindly give yourself some time and space to get to where you're going.

Get a seasonal acupuncture “tune-up”. Even if you only have acupuncture a few times a year, the change of seasons is a good time to do it. Treatments are designed to harmonize your body, or internal environment, with the season, or external environment. Especially if you are feeling stress, anger, or frustration, which are associated with liver disharmony, just one session can help you start the season out right.

Have an enjoyable Spring with boundless energy!

Living today is filled with distractions and obligations that can block intimacy and loving empathy: work, stress, family responsibilities, physical health, mental well-being, ageing and boredom are just some of them.

The reality is that pitfalls to loving are normal facts of life, and it's unrealistic to believe that any love guru, self-help programme, or small blue pill is going to permanently remove all distractions from your life and turn you into a no-fail love machine.

Clinically, the things that impede romance can fall into three areas: stress and anxiety, distractions and lack of focus and, finally, a loss of interest and passion. Rather than perceiving these as challenges to overcome, it might do us good to remember that moving through these areas is common to the process of any loving response. Whether it's during the easy springtime of a romance or the more challenging golden years, intimacy flows from being calm and relaxed.

Taking advantage of those precious moments you have with your partner usually requires some effort. Being passionate and reactive comes from having your senses piqued. A great way to do this is with the evocative scents of essential oils. Some oils that have traditionally been included in aromatherapy recipes for passion include: rose, jasmine, sandalwood, neroli, patchouli, vetiver and ylang ylang.

Inspiring love and passion doesn't have to be an insurmountable challenge or stress-inducing task, but can be a satisfying and delightful ritual that is an expression of love and intimacy in itself. The age-old technique of using aromatic essential oils to set the mood and inspire responsiveness might be just what your modern day love life needs.

1. Relaxation
