Now's the time to rest and replenish… people feel like they've lost their spark in the winter but if you embrace the good things it can bring, it will put you in a much better place – a positive attitude always helps.

Skincare goes seasonal. Pah! It's not enough to be eating seasonally, now it appears that our skincare products should be seasonal, too. Annee de Mamiel may just have a point. Ingredients to brighten up dry, lacklustre skin include rice bran (to increase microcirculation), marshmallow root (an antimicrobial), grapefruit (which decongests and cleanses) calendula (which optimises skin regeneration), and geranium (great for healing broken capillaries and veins). These are blended into her Spring Facial Oil, £58, from demamiel.com.

Now based predominantly in New York, her rare visits to London are only announced to a select handful of clients, but thankfully she has also made sure that certain therapists at Home House are well-versed in the de Mamiel method. Facial acupuncture - Fusing the powerful effects of acupuncture with a luxury facial, Annee de Mamiel achieves wonders not just with the way you look but the way you feel. Having diagnosed the areas of imbalance in your health – sluggish digestion, say – she deals with the root cause with needles in the body and face. This is followed by two forms of Chinese facial massage, using de Mamiel's heavenly facial oils, to stimulate and reinvigorate. Lines disappear, and cheeks and jawline lift. £170 for 90 minutes, in London. (demamiel.com)

"What to do? Well, short of getting pregnant (all those extra hormones have awonderful way of plumping up the skin) or setting the alarm clock for 4am so you can apply an extra layer of moisturiser, one thing that does work is a good serum.... Try Annee de Mamiel's beautiful Spring Facial Oil (£55 from demamiel.com). You can either do the massage by hand or try an odd little gadget that I came across the other day called the jade roller (from £25 at yuroll.com)."

1 Aid lymphatic drainage by raising your head higher than your body when you sleep and have the window open to boost oxygen intake.
2 Get your circulation moving when you wake up. Take ten deep breaths then jump around the room for several minutes. Drink a glass of warm water with lemon to eliminate toxins.
3 If you suffer from puffy eyes (indicating a lymphatic system that isn't working well), make green tea ice cubes. Use them as compresses for ten minutes.
4 Rid the body of excess water by drinking fresh orange juice. It contains potassium, which helps to release fluid and firm body tissue. The vitamin C will help improve your complexion.

My mind had calmed down and I felt ready to have a long snooze. My face had a relaxed look to it - not sure I was 10 years younger but it did look softer in appearance. I walked out of the Spa without makeup, no foundation but lots of colour in my cheeks as well as firmer looking completion.
Best bit - Annee is very enthusiastic about what she does and her warmth and sincerity comes across - she is also extremely knowledgeable. And you are not at the end of the treatment rushed out. Care is taken to ensure you get the best experience.

"De Mamiel is a smiley 39-year old Australian who specialises in facial acupuncture, in my view the only credible alternative to Botox when it comes to treating wrinkles and tissue tone without the need for Valium....De Mamiel, by contrast, charges £125 for around an hour and a half of her time - and it's well worth it. Not only is she an exceptionally gifted practitioner, she is a genuine pleasure to be with...Crucially, she is good at what she does. Very good indeed. She came to acupuncture as part of her battle against cancer...And the treatment? Highly personalised, highly effective, not just in terms of improving the outward appearance of my skin, but also (and without going into too much detail), some of the more tiresome inner workings of my physique. In particular, I noticed a marked firming and strengthening of my jawline (I am cursed with jowliness) which, whilst sadly nothing permanent, nevertheless lasted for a couple of days after each treatment...Go. You won't regret it."

"..Home House is one of those private members' clubs where the staff make you feel about an inch tall. It's full of size 6 women in six inch heels and men talking into two phones at once. But then I met Annee and the surroundings didn't matter. She radiated warmth like, well, a radiator. She took my pulses, looked at my tongue and sighed. 'Oh you poor blossom', she said. I nearly burst into tears. It felt like she was the first person to notice me, really truly notice me - in years. She lay me down on her couch and bundled me up in a cashmere blanket. The next 90 minutes passed in a delicious haze. Yes, there were needles but they didn't hurt. There was also massage and other bits and bobs. She reckons facial acupuncture is a real alternative to Botox and, you know what, I believe her. My skin (yes, my skin) looked and felt fabulous. Back on Exmoor they peered and joked at me. 'You had needles in your face?' I braced myself for the inevitable jeering. But no. 'Come on then, give us her number." www.demamiel.com (just in case you're interested!)"

I’m a big fan of acupuncture, so when my colleague Victoria raved about a practitioner called Annee de Mamiel, I was keen to find out more. Australian-born Annee, 39, now based in London, specialises in facial treatments. I imagined this meant popping needles in my face (not as painful as it sounds) and indeed this is part of it, but there is much, much more.
‘Beauty is about being balanced on the inside, in every way – physically and psychologically,’ says Annee. ‘If you feel good about yourself, it reflects in the way you look. Dry, wrinkled, saggy skin mirrors what is happening in your body, so I look at the roots of the problems and treat those too.’ For instance, the common problem of vertical lines between your eyebrows can relate to liver energy not flowing properly (not just frowning too much!), so as well as needling the lines themselves, Annee treats the liver. She also makes up specially blended oils for each client plus a herbal tea to take home. She incorporates stimulating Tui Na Chinese massage (to invigorate the skin) and LIA Therapy (lymph drainage, incandescent massage and acupressure) to relax you from top to toe.
Formerly a successful banker, Annee studied acupuncture after recovering from cancer, which was diagnosed in 1998. She credits her health today to the integrated approach that her doctors fully supported.

The arrival of spring after the dull winter months is always a reason to celebrate- de Mamiel Spring Facial Oil focuses on this very season and the sense of renewal and positive energy that comes with it. Its creator Annee de Mamiel turned to Chinese Medicine in pursuit of an effective but natural remedy for her own health issues; she then became a qualified Facial Acupuncturist after studying in London, China, New York and L.A, and has set up her own practice in London's Portman Square. De Mamiel incorporates facial oil into her treatments to help revitalise the skin and restore a sense of calm, which led to the creation of her signature range, with a different oil for each season.

What’s really worth it?
- Floatation: serious stressbuster but not for everyone. Check how large the tank is (larger is better).
- MLD (manual lymphatic drainage) – check it’s Vodder technique (the gold standard)
- Real aromatherapy (ie by a qualified aromatherapist)
- A seriously good basic massage. Qualified sports therapists are often fabulous. Thai massage and Tui Na are usually good.
- Facial acupuncture: a serious Botox alternative in the right hands. try Annee de Mamiel
